Keep Track of Your Child's Developmental Progress

There are many ways for your child with autism to receive an education. You may opt for therapies that are focused on detecting your child’s certain weaknesses and helping these weaknesses have less effect on his/her life. Thanks to IDEA, it is required for your child’s school to create an IEP so that the education he/she receives will be of quality and on point and you can keep track of your child’s development.

You may also utilize an AAC device at home to teach, and for your child to learn, communication when they struggle with it. Whatever form of help and education you choose, in the end, this is a marathon. “Yes, I’ve done it.” kind of moments don’t cover these processes. They need attention and dedication, both from you and your child, so you need to keep track of the progress.

There are those dreadful IEP meetings that you go every now and then to make sure that the program is still working. Or in the event that there are some points that need change, you intervene in to change them. All of these efforts focus on for your child to get the most efficient and suitable education. Just for these reasons, it is really important for you to keep track of the developmental progress of your child. In the end, you are their advocate. You are the one to make sure your child is receiving and will receive the most suitable and best possible education.

In what ways keeping track of the progress helps

What keeping track of your progress means is that you are on top of what is going on. You know what your child is struggling with, what she is good at, also what she likes to do and what she dreads to do. That is why you are an essential part of the progress. You spend the most time with your child, and you are the one that has the most understanding about your child.

Keeping track of your child’s development in these areas is really not that difficult a thing to do. Talk to people that your child is interacting; teachers, students, therapists. Understand what is going on. Go to school and get reports, don’t miss IEP meetings as they are really important in that they provide very detailed information regarding your child’s development, what she has done and not done.

With the devices you have at home, you can also make it a habit to keep track of your child’s progress. Keep a journal, maybe. Jot down how she was on a certain behavior and how she is now after using the certain device. It is important that you follow the progress of development so that you can move forward with the education and training.
